deeper

We're searching for something deeper -- we all are.

One I told, and she agreed. One wrote to show me. One tries and tries; it's just under the surface, but there. One doesn't show it, but needs it. One shows a little, shows others a lot. One has it, flashes it, just doesn't say it.

I've heard you all practice; you're good -- really good. But to get us all together to do something magnificent? Where does the goodness break down into amateurism? Are we just playing different arrangements of the same song? You know, if we got our act together, maybe others would be inspired to play too.

Very interesting analogy. Beautiful penmenship and solid content. A response (becareful not to extrapolate too far):

The master plays a very technical but beautiful piece. A room full of students listen. Their task is to follow the master's example. The master sends out some instructors to teach his students saying that he will return later for tryouts. After some practice, some have mastered the notes. Others have captured the rythum. A few play only the easy parts. Wierd Al Yankovich composes a parody, convincing a third of the students that this parody is the real song. Another section decides that the piece needs another verse and skips the master's song. Still another thinks that it doesn't matter what song you play, just as long as you play your instrument.

What will the master say when he returns for tryouts? Who will be chosen to play a concert for the master? On what basis will they be chosen? Are the students free to take artistic liberty? When the concert is played together, will different arrangements be pleasing to the master?

Hm, that's interesting. It takes my analogy in a slightly different direction than I was imagining, but I guess that's the cool thing about analogies.
